Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the brain, playing a crucial role in regulating extracellular ions and neurotransmitter levels, modulating synaptic activity, maintaining glutamate homeostasis, and preserving the integrity of the blood-brain barrier. Upon stimulation such as trauma or infection, astrocytes are rapidly activated, forming reactive astrocytes characterized by proliferation, hypertrophy, and high expression of intermediate filament proteins (including glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, and nestin). Studies have shown that reactive astrocytes possess both neurotoxic and neurotrophic effects.
