Upon stimulation such as trauma or infection, astrocytes are rapidly activated, forming reactive astrocytes characterized by proliferation, hypertrophy, and high expression of intermediate filament proteins (including glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, and nestin). Studies have shown that reactive astrocytes possess both neurotoxic and neurotrophic effects.
